Sled Dog Training

Normally when  you think about dogs racing it would be greyhound or  the Siberian husky that comes to mind but  for many years the Malamutes have also been used.

As a working dog they would have been familiar with being used as a freight dog within a team pulling heavy weights over miles in heavy snow and ice covered terrain.

The main racing season would be  in the winter months due to the heat and humidity levels of the other seasons making it more difficult for the dogs to work or train as their body heat levels rise, although frequent water and rest stops do make it possible to train  in the slightly  warmer seasons preferably late at night or early morning  is more suitable.

At Libertia  apart from showing we wanted to spend more time with our dogs in activities and felt that this was a natural progression as we had imported dogs from kennels with  established working lines .

Not all dogs are naturals but we have found in our team those who  have  the ability to pull with ease  and I hope from the photographs you can see how much pleasure both the dogs and us have whilst doing it.

The Libertia team wish to thank Mary Davidson and Michael Rolston for giving us this opportunity and sharing their knowledge , expertise and time  with us to enable that we do it correctly and ultimately ensuring  that our dogs get the maximum pleasure from the experience .

How to correctly fit the  harness and attach to the rigs, pulling safely and the correct management of the dogs is a major priority before you attempt to do this so please  seek professional advice first.
