To those of you who have never met an Alaskan Malamute all I can say is find one
quick!
To see one is to want one, that was how I felt about them many years ago as
I admired them from a distance, but I waited or was made to wait by my husband as
at the time we felt it would be unfair to take one!!!!!!! on with our other dogs
and commitments as we had been told they did not mix well with other breeds.
So years
later and having moved to a suitable location we have several Mature and Young Malamutes
in our kennels.
We bought our first Malamutes from Cheryl @ Cherdene Alaskan Malamutes
and funnily enough it was through a mutual friend, Bev Graham of Jerivindi Bordeaux
from whom we already have several Bordeaux’s that we found out about this litter.
We have found that ours mix well with some of our other dogs, this may be the exception
to the rule and I don’t advise anyone to rush out to buy one and expect it to mix
without any problems, but like any breed it can be done successfully if monitored
and supervised correctly.
Libertia has recently had the pleasure of being invited to do the publicity shoot/
release for the Toyota Jeep that was raced across the North Pole by Jeremy Clarkson
against a team of Malamutes in the Top Gear programme.
We hope you enjoy and love
our Malamute family as much as we do, many of which have been imported direct from
various kennels world wide including the Del Biagio Kennels who produced the recent
Crufts working group winner 2007.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.
The Alaskan Malamute is one of the most stunning and impressive breed of dogs, occasionally
confused with the Siberian Husky breed and often called ‘Snow Dogs’. A working breed
known as sled dogs or racing dogs who still to this day can do the job they were
bred for, unlike many who have lost the ability to fulfil their true purpose, these
dogs are also used in some search and rescue teams to locate and start digging out
those that may be covered in snow from an avalanche.
A dog who loves human company
it is also a pack dog and they do thrive with their own sort.
Do not be under any
illusion that they don’t require maintenance, they need to be groomed on a regular
basis and when throwing their coat or moulting you will be in the middle of a snow
storm!
They are also a very vocal breed who talk a lot, we are on a daily basis woken up
each morning by the dawn chorus, same time each day and when you go into the kennels
to see them it is a full chorus of talk to me first, this soon stops in dead silence
once you have said hello to each one but I can assure you they are a wonderful breed
to own and give great pleasure in both appearance, companionship and loyalty.
They
are a large breed of dog who are very eager to please and when set tasks will do
it to their best ability and look for praise, but they do need to be trained and
ring-
Like any breed there are certain health issues that must be taken into consideration
if thinking of purchasing one, some excellent links can be found on our ‘links’ page.
